About Cavaliers

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been the companion of kings for centuries. They are playful intelligent, eager to please and even sweeter than they look.  Cavaliers are an absolute delight. Cavaliers are the most popular toy breed in the UK and have steadily gained in popularity in the US .  They adapt well to active or sedentary lifestyles. They are hearty, sporting and great with children.  At an average weight of 12-18 pounds, and height of 12-13 inches, they are the ideal companion pet. Most are great travelers;  Always eager to go with you by any means of transport. Cavaliers have personality plus. They share their happy spirit with an almost constantly wagging tail. They add joy and laughter to many households.   Cavaliers are so much more than a pretty package.

They love children and other pets. In fact they are so sweet and tolerant that they must be protected from small children. They make good watchdogs (not guard dogs) as they will bark to alert but are quickly quieted.  They do not continue yapping as some other breeds do.  They require no professional grooming and have a soft, lustrous odor-free coat.  To control shedding and prevent matting, daily brushing is a must.  They housebreak  easily compared to many other breeds.

Not just a lovely lapdog, Cavaliers are multifaceted.  The Cavalier's hunting heritage is very evident when you observe them outdoors.   They are a marvel to watch as they quarter a field, ears flying. They will take the stance of a pointer and flush birds.  Cavaliers have a strong prey drive and may  chase any animal intruder.  Most dogs do not know that they should stop and look both ways before crossing the street. They do not perceive danger at the site of approaching cars or animals.  Therefore, a fenced yard is an absolute must.  When on walks on leash, if an unknown dog is approaching it is best to pick up your small dog.

Cavalier owners also enjoy many other activities with their dogs.  Cavaliers excel as owner assisted therapy dogs in programs such as Delta Society.  Cavaliers also do well in competitions such as rally and obedience, dance, conformation and agility.

Cavaliers love to snuggle and are the quintessential  lapdog. The Cavalier's famous "comforter" temperament is another strong suit.  Temperament is integral to breed type. They are NOT an independent breed. As with all toy breeds, the Cavalier 'comforter spaniel' is  a companion animal.  They prefer to sleep in or near their master's bed.

If you are are ready to make a commitment and provide a lifetime of responsible pet ownership, you may have found just the right breed for you.   A Cavalier will treat you like royalty.  They deserve nothing less than the best in return.
